Olalla studio lauded for GH Civic Center art

Olalla sculptor Gary Jackson recently completed a major art installation for the City of Gig Harbor. The work, a stainless steel wall mural, is located in the foyer of the city’s new civic center, directly above the entrance to the council chambers.

Titled “Harbor Landings,” the sculpture depicts historical scenes from the town’s pioneer days.

“The wonderful metal sculpture is quite a showpiece and focal point for those entering our new building,” said City Administrator Mark Hoppen.

Working closely with the Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society, Jackson selected photos from the society’s archives depicting the city’s historic landmarks, industry and architecture.

“We wanted to reinforce Gig Harbor’s image as The Maritime City,” Jackson said. “So we included scenes of early boat building facilities, fishing boats and ferries, a fisherman mending his nets, Mt. Rainier, the Narrows Bridge and a variety of wildlife.”

Each piece was individually cut from stainless steel, shaped and welded into a montage measuring 25 feet wide by 6 feet high.

Jackson was designated Featured Artist of the Month for February by the Kitsap County Arts Commission. Artist’s work is available to view at www.kitsapgov.com/boards/ab_featured_artist.htm.
