IslandWood has announced the 2003 Winter/Spring schedule of programs and used customer feedback and ideas to develop new and exciting classes designed for enhanced learning.
Community program tuition supports the School Overnight Program for 4th and 5th grade students. February classes offer something for everyone:
Saturday & Sunday, Feb. 8-9 Ingredients for Romance, Cooking with IslandWood Chef Greg Atkinson. Fee: $300 per person; includes workshops, food and lodging ($150 is a tax-deductible donation).
Chef Atkinson invites individuals and couples to learn more about romantic cuisine or the art of letter and poem writing just in time for the most sentimental dinner of the year. An after-dinner speaker will offer an engaging lecture on successful relationships. After a night spent in one of the cozy lodges, return home with your own love potion.
Saturday & Sunday, Feb. 22-23 Creating a Childrens Book with Nancy Woodman. National Geographic Society childrens book author and illustrator. Fee: $150, includes lunch. Have a great idea for a childrens book? Woodman will guide you through the process that gives wonderful ideas form and direction.
Concrete Ideas with Lynn Di Nino. Fee: $100, includes lunch; plus $25 materials fee. Concrete is a fun, workable, colorful, lightweight art medium. Learn about new advances in concrete and apply several techniques applicable to your everyday world countertops, wall murals, floors, fountains, indoor and outdoor sculpture.
Saturday, Feb. 22 Find Your Roots: Beginning Genealogy with Sharon Boundy; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fee: $45 per person. Before arriving at IslandWood you will receive a template for mapping the ancestral information you already know. During class, learn about Internet sites, library resources and methods for investigating your family history
The Nature of Glass Art with Diane Bonciolini, Mesolini Glass Studio; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee $75 includes lunch; plus $30 materials fee. Explore the beauty of glass and nature to make your own glass picture frame and mirror. After the workshop, Bonciolini will fire your finished work at her studio. Pieces may be picked up or mailed to you after the workshop.
Sunday, Feb 23 Art in Nature with Colleen Hayward, Cornish College of Arts; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee: $75, includes lunch. Learn about the history and methods of contemporary ecological art. Then create specific site sketches that respond to the physical ecology of the environment by walking, observing, gathering and arranging. Small groups will collaborate on a variety of projects, which will be documented and shared in a final discussion.
Weaving With Cedar Bark with Melinda West; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $75, includes lunch; plus $30 materials fee. Become acquainted with common techniques of basketry construction, and then focus on traditional Northwest styles. Learn how to prepare cedar bark, bear grass, and sweetgrass, how to weave and twine over a mold, and how to lash a basket onto a rustic frame of grapevine or driftwood.
