Dr. Bial becomes newest EnviroStar

Bremerton dentist Dr. John J. Bial has earned the EnviroStars certification for implementing forward-thinking hazardous waste policies and procedures.

“Any effort to ensure the safety of the environment for future generations is a plus,” said Dr. Bial, when asked why he wanted to become EnviroStars certified.

Dr. Bial’s office takes handles hazardous wastes by taking them to the Kitsap County Moderate Risk Waste Facility in Bremerton. For example, wastes such as amalgam and disinfecting solution, fixer from the x-ray machine are taken to a photo processing company. Spent fluorescent lamps are recycled through a licensed vendor.

Hazardous waste reduction is also a focus for Dr. Bial and his staff. They have eliminated gluteraldehyde, a flammable sterilizing chemical that poses a potential risk when poured down the drain, and replaced it with an ultrasonic cleaner. They also have plans to reduce water pollution by installing an amalgam wastewater separation unit, which removes mercury before the waste goes down the drain.
