COVER STORY
2002 HBA Parade of Homes “best ever”
“It was a great event — the best we’ve ever had,” commented an obviously pleased Art Castle, executive vice president of the Homebuilders Association of Kitsap County (HBA). “We were very excited that this year we were able to provide showcase projects for the public to tour. We’ve had uniform reports of great attendance and great interest from people interested in buying homes as well as people looking for remodelers and custom builders.”
This year’s annual Parade of Homes, the HBAs annual opportunity to showcase the work of its members, featured 26 homes located from Port Orchard to Kingston. Of those, there were three showcase homes, 15 new, for sale homes, five custom houses and three remodeled homes.

Best of Show-For Sale winner was this home on Adria Lane on Bainbridge Island built by Chaffey Homes.
The event was held August 10 and 11 and the winners were announced at the annual awards banquet held on August 23, at the WestCoast Silverdale Hotel.
Several of the available homes in the Parade were sold during the event and a substantial number of builders and remodelers connected with potential clients for either new homes or remodeling work.
Judging for the 2002 Parade of Homes included two teams of judges — one for the homes that were for sale and the other for the custom and remodeled homes.

Charlie Mackell of Northwest Renovations, winner of the Best in Show-Remodel award.
Judging the homes for sale were; Puyallup builder Lyle Fox of Fox & Dalia Homes; Wendy Edwards of Interiors NW in Tacoma; and Rick Tremaine of Whidbey Island Bank in Oak Harbor.
Rating the custom and remodels were Mike Fowler of Mithune Architects in Seattle; Sandy McAdams of Sandy’s Design and Remodeling Inc., in Kirkland; and Jim Groves of Groves & Co. in Port Hadlock.
“The Parade is an excellent tool to market what we have as builders, said an elated Rick Courson of Cedar Bay Homes. Courson, a nationally recognized “green builder,” won the award for the best use of environmentally materials in a home.
“The key is expanding upon the unique nicheand talentsthat each of us have. It’s important to find and develop that area and market it through the Parade. Sometimes it takes awhile, and we do need to be aware of public demand and knowledge,” he said.
Courson added, “Sometimes we need to step up and help inform the public about what we do and why it’s important. One such tool is the Parade of Homes.”
There were awards in five price categories, plus the customs and remodels and a number of special awards. However, the Showcase Homes were special projects provided for the public to view and tour, but were not judged. There were also several homes that won more than one award.
