Last mile committee to meet

The Kitsap Regional Telecommunications Committee’s (KRTC) subcommittee on “last mile” solutions will hold its next public meeting on June 6 at the Poulsbo Fire Station, from 8 to 10 a.m.

“Last mile” is the term for the final connection between a high-speed backbone, such as the fiber network the Kitsap Public Utility District is laying, and the residential or commercial end-user.

Skip Malette, of DigiBode Inc., and Rand Hein, of Voice Processing Specialists Inc., will present a potential last mile solution for Bainbridge Island — creating a local utility district (LUD). In order to create a LUD, over 50 percent of households in the area would need to agree.

The LUD would lay and maintain the last mile physical infrastructure and then recoup the cost via an increase in the homeowner’s property taxes, possibly as little as $30 a month for a set period.
