Youll be in luck if you happen to have the bad luck to go into cardiac arrest while working out at the Poulsbo Athletic Club. But the clubs owner, Wade Zinn, isnt leaving it up to luck.
Zinn recently purchased a defibrillator a device used to restore a heartbeat in case of a cardiac emergency at the facility. Zinn and his employees have all been trained to use the device as well as taking refresher CPR courses.
Each minute that passes between cardiac arrest when a person has no pulse and is not breathing decreases the chance of survival by about 10 percent. According to a 2000 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, cardiac arrest victims who received defibrillation had a much higher survival rate.
Other local business and government agencies that also have defibrillators include Olympic Fitness Club in Port Orchard, several local golf courses, the Port of Kingston, Washington State Ferries, the Kitsap County jail, Raytheon Corp. and almost every fire engine and ambulance. |
