The Bremerton Symphony Association recently announced the winners of its 2002 Concerto Competition held in January. This year, the annual competition for youth who reside in Kitsap County, Belfair, or Gig Harbor and have not yet graduated from high school, was open to piano players. Next year all other musicians of classical musical instruments will be eligible to audition.
The winners of this years Concerto Competition, identical twins Aya and Sachi Sugimoto, played Bachs Concerto for Two Pianos in C Major, 3rd Movement. The Peace Lutheran School sixth graders are the daughters of Yoshiyuki and Chiyuki Sugimoto of Silverdale and have taken piano lessons from Bremerton piano teacher Irene Bowling for the past five years.
The eleven year-old twins have been invited to perform the Bach Concerto with the Bremerton Symphony Orchestra during the 2002-2003 Season.
The team of judges named Jayde Mychal Doyle as the alternate in the Concerto Competition and Theordora Carson, Brittany Stephens, and Aaron Otheim received honorable mention.
The Symphony regrets to announce that the West Sound Pops in the Admiral concert, scheduled for April 6 has been cancelled. The board made the decision after considerable review and has chosen to focus its efforts on the remaining performances of the season.
The Bremerton Symphony League is once again offering two scholarships to young musicians who attend an orchestra or vocal camp during the summer of 2002. The $250 scholarships are available to regional student musicians who have not yet completed the eleventh grade.
The deadline to submit applications is May 3, with the scholarship winners to be announced at the Symphonys May 18 concert. Information and application forms have been mailed to all West Sound school district music educators and private music teachers.
