Walking on Turtle Island at The Playhouse

Robert Owens will perform his original two-act, one-man play, Walking on Turtle Island, on Jan. 25 and 26. He gives a portrayal of 21 real-life Native characters. Owens is an international performer who has toured much of the U.S., Australia, and Canada. His work is created through life experience and a natural gift of intuitive communication.

The narrator, Iyeska, introduces us to some of the ways Native people think and view this world. With powwow songs and his unique style of poetry, he sets the stage for an evening of laughter and tears.

In Act One, we meet a young boy, his grandfather and his dog living on a reservation today along with "Night Flying Woman." In act two, Iyeska returns with a look at war through the eyes of Tyee John, of the Confederated tribes of Siletz Oregon. The show closes with Jesse White Toes, a modern day, mixed-blood sundancer now in jail from "too much crazy horse malt liquor." Iyeska visits and nudges him back onto the "Red Road."

Walking on Turtle Island will be performed Jan. 25 and 26, with shows Friday and Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $9 for students and seniors, $12 for adults, and may be charged by phone at (206) 842-8569. The Playhouse is located at 200 Madison Ave. North, Bainbridge Island. Box Office hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
