The Business of THE ARTS
Twenty years of inspiration at BAC
For 20 years ceramist Debbie Fecher has been visually telling people to “take life with a grain of salt.” Her whimsical Shakers – porcelain salt and pepper shakers – put a humorous twist on life’s frustrations or express a compassionate insight into the human condition.

To celebrate two decades of life with the Shakers, this year Fecher exhibits new work inspired by those porcelain figures. Giving herself permission to explore at will, the Bainbridge Island artist pursues more detailed and in-depth treatments of a few of the many ideas which have come to her from the Shakers over the years. Continuing in sculpted and painted clay, she experiments with many painting techniques and with other media to create both two and three-dimensional work. Many pieces are larger and more detailed than the Shakers. Some are wall-hung pieces; others, free-standing sculpture.

Her subject matter remains the same, however: humorous and compassionate treatment of those moments and feelings that make up life – hope, despair, tenderness, awe, frustration, love.

The exhibition, which opens at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts Oct. 6, will be on-line for viewing and purchases beginning Oct. 17 at www.fecher-gramstad.com.

Also showing: “4 Walls and a Roof: The House as Image and Metaphor,” a group exhibition with work by Richard Stine, Maggie Smith, Bob Lucas, Carolyn Law, Morgan Brig, Gayle Bard.

Featured jeweler: David Weinstock.
