Skookum Corporation, a regional non-profit with its main operations in Bremerton, but headquartered in Port Townsend, has been nominated for ISO 14001 status.
Skookum employs at-risk people and delivers a wide range of services to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS), Bangor, Indian Island, Ft. Lewis, and other clients in the Puget Sound region.
The firms Environmental Division delivers asbestos, lead, and mold abatement services to PSNS as well as other clients in Kitsap and Jefferson Counties.
The firm is also well known for its Jump Rope Division that has employed the severely handicapped in Port Townsend for many years as well as for its recycling operations in Jefferson County.
Skookum recently won a contract to manage the equipment provided to soldiers at Ft. Lewis and received an award for its outstanding logistical support to the Army Reserve Officers Training Program at Ft. Lewis this past Summer.
The firms Contract Division delivers janitorial, street striping, building maintenance, and portable sanitation services to customers in Kitsap, Jefferson, Mason and Pierce Counties.
Skookum, which previously received ISO 9002 status in January, qualified for the International Standard Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) after a complete overhaul of its internal systems to ensure compliance with state, federal, and local environmental regulatory requirements. It is the only organization in the United States that employs individuals with barriers to competitive employment that has achieved ISO 9002 and ISO 14001 status and is licensed to deliver asbestos and lead abatement services.
The firm is also a two-time winner of the Presidents Award for employing people with disabilities and a Year 2000 winner of the Governors Award for Medium Non-Profit Employer of the Year. |
