Helen Higgs has had a life-long love affair with art. The Port Orchard resident was born in Detroit and educated in Dayton, Ohio parochial schools. She began her art career as a child and pursued it later at the Dayton Art Institute.
When she moved to Port Orchard 21 years ago, she began a series of 12 paintings, one for each month of the year. In each painting, she incorporated flowers and items that she observed in the area that month. She was impressed with the profusion of flowers growing in the area, that it has continued to be an inspiration. She continues to photograph the flowers, scenery and skies of the Pacific Northwest and to display her work.
Although she has had eight children, was a scout leader for over 20 years, and worked in a wide variety of jobs, through it all she has never ceased to draw and paint. She also has had an extensive career as a technical illustrator for several manufacturing and engineering companies, and is retired from PSNS Code 2340 where she was the technical illustrator for the training department.
Her exhibition opens the seventh of September in the Manette Artists Edge Gallery and runs for the entire month. |
