Teeters new chair of Literacy Council board

DeDe Teeters has been elected chair of the Literacy Council of Kitsap’s Board of Directors. Other officers for the 2001-2002 program year are Jim Hall, vice chair; Terry Schroeder, secretary; and Amy Echternach, treasurer.

The Literacy Council provides free tutoring to adults in reading, writing, math and other basic skills, both one-on-one and in small-group settings. The council offers English as a second language tutoring, conversation classes and citizenship training for immigrants; and provides instruction in workplace skills and classes in GED preparation.

Teeters is the manager of Armchair Books in the South Kitsap Mall and succeeds Elaine Bryant as chair. Hall owns Reflections Bed & Breakfast in Port Orchard, Schroeder is community coordinator for the Department of Social and Health Services, and Echternach is assistant manager of the downtown Bremerton branch of Washington Mutual.

Continuing on the bare Bryant, an Olympic College counselor; Vivian Harris, a self-employed accountant; Jack Kinert, recently retired from Olympic College; Vickie Levi, a community member; Pam Piper, an investment representative with Edward Jones; and Cheryl Sharp, a community member. Jen Southworth, a retired Central Kitsap teacher and longtime tutor, is an honorary board member.
