Green Works, the regional technical assistance and recognition program sponsored by Kitsap County Public Works, honored the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce and Bainbridge Island Computer Consulting for their environmental efforts.
The Chamber, recently designated a Distinguished Business in the Green, wanted to do more than meet the basic requirements of the program, which focuses on waste reduction, recycling, and closing the loop with recycled products. In addition to its many waste prevention strategies, the Chamber provides publications that help businesses find assistance for recycling and proper disposal of hazardous wastes.
It was its efforts to recognize members that have received Green Works certification that got Bainbridge Island Computer Consulting involved.
Owner John Greer, while flagging the environmentally friendly companies on the Chambers online member directory, decided to become a Business in the Green as well. In partnership, the Chamber and the web design company made it possible to access the Green Works web page and membership application via a link to the Chambers web site at www.bainbridgechamber.com.
Greer estimates that by performing nearly all business functions electronically, his company is 99 percent paperless. His business, which is run out of his office on High School Road and sometimes from his home office, recycles everything from newspapers and cardboard to glass, aluminum and plastic beverage containers. He uses copier paper, letterhead and file folders made with post-consumer waste.
Any business in Kitsap County is eligible to apply for Green Works membership. For more information, contact Vicki Bushnell, Green Works Coordinator, at
