Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse, the second largest home improvement chain in the nation, will abandon Bremerton for a site just outside the city limits, a half-mile north on Highway 303 between Fuson and Franklin roads. Plans call for Lowes to build a 159,188-square-foot warehouse and retail store on the site.
Although shoppers wont really be impacted by the move, it will cost Bremerton some tax revenue, but not as much as it would have earlier in the year. This past May, Kitsap County and its four incorporated cities reached a revenue-sharing agreement that involves an exchange of tax dollars between the county and the cities to lessen the impact of business relocations such as this.
According to the plan, if Lowes moves, revenues lost by Bremerton sales tax, property tax for roads plus admissions tax will be replaced by the county. The amount would be 75 percent of the lost revenue the first year, 50 percent the second and 25 percent the third.
Lowes, which bought out Eagle Hardware a year and half ago, had originally wanted to demolish the present store and build a larger, more modern facility on the site. However, Rite-Aid Corp., which controls the property at 4220 Wheaton Way, would have lost its master lease rights if that had been allowed. Now, Rite-Aid may be the only store left in the retail center. |
