On June 15, general contracting and subcontracting firms, suppliers, unions, businesses and politicians put aside work to fundraise for charity.
Diverse in background and careers, workers played golf and fundraised $50,000 at the First Annual Washington C.L.U.B. Charity Golf Classic, held at the Gold Mountain Golf Complex, in Bremerton. Tournament title sponsors were Ferguson Wellman Capital Management, Inc., of Portland and Parsons Constructors, Inc., in Seattle.
On August 8, C.L.U.B. officers will present checks at Childrens Hospital, in Seattle, to three charities: The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation of Washington, D.C., Holly Ridge Center of Bremerton and Childrens Hospital of Seattle. C.L.U.B. officers Roger Boatwright, Jon Bettendorf and Grant Alexander will present approximately $25,000 to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation and $12,500 each to Holly Ridge Center and Childrens Hospital.
C.L.U.B. is statewide, said Ted Higley, C.L.U.B. co-chair. It is a nonprofit organization supported by the Washington State Building Trades Council in Olympia. The goals are to bring people with diverse interests together who work in and around Washingtons building and construction trades and to raise money for charities.
We focus on children, said Jon Bettendorf, C.L.U.B co-chair. Assisting children who need special help is where we find common ground. The real champions of the golf tournament are the benefiting charities. Our goal for next year is $100,000.
Bill Gearllach, of Carpenters Local 1597 in Bremerton, nominated Holly Ridge Center as one of the three tournament beneficiaries. My daughter attended Holly Ridge Center 20 years ago, Gearllach said.
The $12,500 will go towards The Infant Toddler Program, which serves children, birth to 3, with special needs, said Roxanne Bryson, executive director of Holly Ridge Center. During 2000, the program served 325 children in Kitsap County. We are grateful to the officers of C.L.U.B. for including Holly Ridge Center.
The money raised will benefit the uncompensated care program at Childrens Hospital and Regional Medical Center, ensuring quality care for all children of the Northwest, regardless of their families&Mac226; ability to pay, said Wendy Gehring, Guild Projects Manager. This year, alone, Childrens will provide more than $26 million in uncompensated care.
Sixty-two businesses and organizations sponsored the golf tournament. Erik Butler, general sales manager of Today Chevrolet in Bremerton, sponsored two major drawings a Chevrolet Malibu and Chevrolet F-10 truck for holes-in-one. Although there were no winners, the new vehicles parked on the golf course added to the excitement.
Today Chevrolet is helping people throughout the state, whenever possible, Butler said. We are committed to helping children everywhere.
John Sandifer and Lori Matsukawa played golf and awarded prizes to golf winners. Sandifer anchored 12 years with KOMO-TV and 12 years with KING-TV in Seattle. He currently works as the business manager for the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Matsukawa anchors for KING-TV in Seattle.
The Washington C.L.U.B. Charity Golf Classic is a new name and face given to an older tournament, called the D.A.D.s Day golf tournament, Alexander said.
John Steffens, now executive secretary-treasurer of the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters, originated the D.A.D.s Day golf tournament nine years ago. Olympic Peninsula Building and Construction Trades Council, Silverdale, hosted the tournament.
C.L.U.B. distributed prizes to golf and raffle winners. Prizes included trophies, Mariner tickets, Hilton SeaTac reservations, a Four Seasons dinner, a TV set and DVD with six movies. Tee shirts were included in the playing cost, and matching caps given to early registrants. C.L.U.B. gave tee shirts to volunteers from Childrens Hospital and Holly Ridge Center
