The word adventure comes to mind. When was the last time youve heard someone use the words adventure and Bremerton in the same sentence? Bremerton has been called a lot of things, but never adventurous until now.
The art saga continues, meandering and molding itself, ever-changing from day to day. The Bremerton Arts District is attracting national attention.
It was six months ago that I began my call for $50,000 houses for artists to rent. The stunning results from the search brought to light the vast availability of low cost houses in West Bremerton and the high number of rental owners that want out of the business.
As I previously shared, I was confronted with the house directly behind the 7-11 store at 6th and Park practically in Downtown Bremerton. It was not what I was looking for and was more than Id planned to pay. But, like a calling there it was!
This is where the adventure began. That house was nestled amidst five concrete walls. I could taste a mural project. lt was appropriate, opportune timing. I could envision and formulate the project. Bremerton had a good pool of artists to draw upon. The fenced house yard could be the material work site and most importantly, a crime laden pocket area could be turned around for the better.
The house was purchased, the old house repairs began and the mural project was thrown out to the public in search of mural artists. Dennis McDaniel was assigned head artist and he selected the project imagery of an old growth forest.
Twenty other people joined in and committees took shape. Mayor Horton approved the Forest Mural Project and the city will provide assistance.
Mike Shepard, city council person accepted the position of chairman. He encouraged the group to establish a non-profit status to accommodate contributors and regulations.
This is column three of the Bremerton Mural Saga. It ends here. Now its time to go to work. The starting process is over and the adventure begins as a community of artists, art advocates, business people and property owners pull together to create an old growth forest. As Bremerton grows, it will do so around a wooded grove of lush imagery.
Visit the mural site anytime around the Rose Cottage behind the 7-11 store. If youd like to help support our five wall mural project, send donations to Forest Mural of Bremerton, 408 Pacific Avenue, Bremerton, WA 98337. For information, call (360) 373-3187. At this stage of the adventure, your help is greatly needed. |
