Robert Roland, co-founder of Port Orchards First State Bank and Roland & Roland Realty in Purdy, died on June 15, at his Port Orchard home. He was 81.
Although semi-retired for the past 15 years, Roland remained busy developing the Horseshoe Lake Golf Course and managing his other properties.
Roland and his twin brother, Howard, were born in New York on March 13, 1920. They opened their real estate business during the early 1950s, became successful in the land development business and helped found and operate First State Bank in Port Orchard in 1969. The bank, located in the Westbay Center, was later sold to Puget Sound Bank.
Roland s parents died at an early age, and he was raised by sisters Mildred Roland and Ruth Pastermack, who preceded him in death.
The Roland brothers had early careers as singers and were featured performers with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. Later, they traveled the country, performing a singing and comedy act.
Roland who loved golf, had at least four holes in one and consistently worked at keeping his score below or at least equal to his age.
He and his wife, Gloria, celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.
Survivors include his wife and brother; a daughter, Aline; three sons, Jeff, Rick and Alex; and eight grandchildren.
