Rotarians return from West Indies

A group of 10 East Bremerton Rotarians and their guests recently returned from two weeks on the island of St. Lucia in the West Indies.

With the cooperation of the Rotary Club of St. Lucia South and Rotary International, they performed a remodel of St. Jude’s Hospital, creating space for an outpatient clinic in the former Army evacuation hospital.

The project was coordinated by John Armstrong of Armstrong Homes, who is a member of the club. However, the actual work, which the Rotarians performed, and included demolition of some concrete walls and construction of a number of exam rooms, was led by Frank Phipps of FPH Construction.

Also on this trip the group delivered badly needed school supplies to schools on the island. With assistance from Group Health Cooperative, Kids First Vietnam, and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, computers were delivered to the Vieux Fort Life Centre, a vocational skills center for youth age 16 and up.

This is the second trip to St. Jude’s for East Bremerton Rotary. In February of 1999 a group went down and did cleaning and painting of the exterior of the hospital.
