Nakatas presented with Langer award

Ellen and Don Nakata were recently presented with the annual “Hannah Langer Spirit of Philanthropy Award” by the Kitsap Community Foundation. The award is presented annually to an individual, couple or group whose contributions to the community have enriched the quality of life in Kitsap County.

Until her death in 1999, Hannah Langer was active in many community affairs, including the Admiral Theater Foundation, Kitsap Historical Society and Martha & Mary Nursing Home.

The Kitsap Community Foundation, established in 1996, is a county wide community foundation providing groups and individuals a means to make timely contributions to their communities. In recognition of Mrs. Langer’s generous contributions to the community, the group established the award.

The Nakatas, long time residents of Kitsap County and owners of Town and Country Markets, Inc., have given their talent, energy and financial support to a host of community activities, projects and causes as individuals and in conjunction with their grocery stores.

Langer’s daughter, Helen Langer Smith and granddaughter, Cydly Smith presented the award on April 24, at the “Celebration of Philanthropy” ceremony and dinner held at the Wing Point Golf and Country Club on Bainbridge Island. The event also included annual distribution of grants to a variety of Kitsap non-profit organizations.

Responsible investment of donations enables the Kitsap Community Foundation to make present grants and extend the life of these donations for future generations.
