Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA) concludes its 2000-2001-theatre season with a production of Guys & Dolls which will run form April 20 to May 5.
The classic musical fable of Broadway, Guys & Dolls is based on the story and characters of Damon Runyon, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. BPAs production is directed by Jerri Lee Young, and sponsored by Town & Country Market.
The shows 50th anniversary is presently being commemorated by the Museum of the City of New York with an exhibit that runs through June. Produced by Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin, the musical opened at the 46th Street Theatre on November 24, 1950. Originally envisioned as a serious romantic story by its producers, the musical was eventually re-envisioned as a comedy. Based on Damon Runyons The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown, the production presents a world of gangsters, gamblers, wild humor and song and dance. The musical remains a favorite for all ages, and it includes one of the catchiest, strongest scores Broadway has ever known.
Guys & Dolls will be performed Friday & Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, at 3 p.m. A special Pay-What-You-Can performance will take place Thursday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m.
