Schubert’s Die Winterreise, Williamson
and Quitslund to perform at benefit

Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA) celebrates its expanded classical music program with a benefit concert showcasing one of the great masterpieces Sunday, Jan. 14 at 4 p.m.

Die Winterreise (The Winter Journey) of 1827 was one of Schubert’s last and most personal works. Despite the fame that has long surrounded it, any performance of this song cycle is a rare event. It is a work of extraordinary variety, with deep sensitivity devoted to the nuances and psychology of each of the 24 poems that make up the cycle.

David Williamson was a founding member of Grease Paint, and has held starring and backstage roles in numerous BPA productions. He studied singing at the New England Conservatory and German literature at Tufts and has taught at the United World College in Santa Fe. He is a 2001 candidate for a doctorate in music history at the University of Washington.

James Quitslund was rehearsal pianist and soloist in the heyday of Bainbridge Light Opera in the 1950s. He studied at Harvard and at Oxford, and taught German literature at Phillips Academy in Andover and at Williams College.

Proceeds benefit the BPA Classical Music Fund which was established in 1998 by anonymous donors in memory of Harry and Jean Goodfellow. Tickets are $15 for students/seniors, and $18 for adults. They are available at The Playhouse, 200 Madison Ave. N., and can be charged by phone at (206) 842-8569. BPA Box Office hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
