Hang on folks. Get ready for the ride. The business of art aint no smooth sailing. Its a roller coaster of extremes. Its as boring as white socks and as exciting as stock splits. Art connotes an artists struggle or a rich mans ownership. What is art? Its anyones call. What is an artist? What is a collector? What is a print? How do you buy? How do you sell? How do you view?
Art is the epitome of success. It is the most sought after attainment only behind money and power ultimate investment.
Kitsap County has never had a significant reputation for its arts until recently. Now the county is riddled with galleries, studio museums, frame shops, print stores, and performance facilities.
Ive been around a long time fourth generation Bremertonian. I know Bremerton and I know the business of art.
After 7 years of concentrated art studies I remember walking down the steps of the college for the last time shaking my head and saying to myself I know nothing. It was as if I suddenly had the realization of how much I didnt know. I stopped doing art for five years. Then one day, in a serious art discussion, someone disagreed with me and made references to some author. I turned to that person and said, Opinions may differ, but I have as much art knowledge as most books.
From that moment on, almost all my waking hours involved art.
With my art background, being represented and exhibiting in top galleries around the country and owning my own gallery for over ten years, I feel comfortable inviting you to join me in this monthly art ride.
Next month, I will overview successes and pitfalls. (Art in reference to the business of the visual arts, but still to be aware that the arts also include dance, music, and words.)
(Editors Note: Amy Burnett owns her own gallery and is active in the arts community. Amy may be reached at (360) 373-3187 or www.amyburnett.com.). |
