Keychain credit card holders at risk |
| Gig Harbor Police have reported a new trend in identity theft. Suspects are scanning stolen keychain credit cards into a computer and changing the name and account numbers to reflect the suspects name and the victims credit card number.
The information is then printed on to a plastic sheet with self adhesive backing. It is attached to one of these plastic cards and trimmed to fit. A copy of the back of the card is also scanned and attached to the back of the fraudulent card. When a cashier swipes the card, it does not work, so they check the card against the suspects identification. That information will match and then the suspect has the cashier manually enter the credit card number. Since it is from a valid account, the transaction will process. The only information needed by the suspect is a valid account number and expiration date.

Credit checks must be job related |
| Washington State law says employers are prohibited from obtaining credit reports of job applicants or employees unless the information is substantially job related, and the employers reasons for obtaining such information are disclosed to the applicant in writing.
Employers may continue to perform background checks, but they must now make sure that the information they obtain (or that is provided to them by an outside investigation firm) does not include an applicants credit information (unless it is job related).
Employers should also review their job descriptions to determine which, if any, of their positions warrant seeking credit information and notify applicants of this in writing.
