New Department of Revenue reference manual
provides information on state and local taxes |
| The Washington State Department of Revenue recently posted the 2007 edition of the states tax manual on its web site. The report provides an overview of Washingtons tax system and summarizes more than 50 state and local taxes. It cites their purpose, history, rate changes over the years, and how much tax each has produced over the past decade.
The manual shows that the retail sales and use tax generated $7.4 billion, nearly three times the $2.5 billion produced by the second-highest revenue generator, the business and occupation tax paid by businesses.
The Department has published the tax reference manual periodically since 1975 as a service to businesses, the Legislature, state and local agencies, academic community and the general public. It provides a broad look at how the current tax system evolved from territorial days to the present.
Visit this link to find or download a copy of the manual.

Do you need a job application when
you have a resume? |
| Many employers are accepting resumes in lieu of having job applicants fill out a job application form. Would you believe that there is more to the applicant than is revealed on the resume? The application typically will ask if the candidate has ever been convicted of a crime, why the left their previous position and requires them to list the last three or four jobs they have held not just the key jobs listed on the resume.
If the last few jobs the applicant held didnt work out, they typically will not list them on their resume.
Additionally, and most importantly, the applicant is requested to certify that the information on the application is truthful.

Talent management top issue
for human resources in 2007 |
| Talent management is the top strategic human resource issue that companies expect to face in 2007, according to a recent survey by ORC Worldwide. Specifically, respondents say they are concerned about acquiring, developing and retaining talent at all levels of the organization. And while succession planning remains a key activity, it is clearly no longer the sole activity of talent management. Companies have started to take a broader approach to talent management because they recognize there is a shortage of talent, particularly in industries like engineering.
The second-highest priority for 2007, according to respondents, is strategic human resource management. These activities include human resource out-sourcing, aligning human resource activities with the business, and implementing common global human resource processes.
