CEO Magazine says KMHS top
nonprofit to work for
   Kitsap Mental Health Services (KMHS) has been named first among non-profit organizations in the 2005 Washington CEO Magazine’s Best Companies to Work For competition. Over 100 companies were nominated in this year’s competition. KMHS also took first place in 1999 and has placed as a finalist in the competition every year since.
   KMHS was profiled in the July issue of Washington CEO Magazine. Executive Director, Larry Keller said, “it is reassuring to know that our efforts to provide a healthy environment are working.” The awards were made in Seattle at a dinner where KMHS was among the 52 finalists honored.

Art Anderson working on
new marine electrical software
   Bremerton’s Art Anderson Associates has entered the primary funding phase of the development of an innovative maritime electrical engineering software package under a research grant from the federal government.
   The software, titled “SeaPro,” is being developed to integrate electrical parts and systems databases with vessel design software. This will streamline the design process and create an accurate model of shipboard electrical installation. The streamlined process reduces data entry, information sharing and meets quality assurance requirements, resulting in savings of approximately 20 percent of the final vessel design and construction cost.

Coverings opens design center
   Nationwide Floor & Window Coverings owner Bob Simonoff recently announced that in conjunction with its second year anniversary, the firm has opened a design center at 3273 Chico Way in Bremerton.
   According to Simonoff, “Nationwide’s business model of providing superior service to its clients will not change and will still ‘bring the showroom to you.’ However, for some of the clients, especially new construction, we have determined the need to a design center.”

Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk 2005
   The Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s disease will take place on Sept. 17 at Waterfront Park in Silverdale. Nearly 400 people from across the state are expected to participate in this year’s event to raise funds and promote the progress surrounding Alzheimer’s. It’s now more taxing being
a millionaire in Washington
   Governor Christine Gregoire has signed a new estate tax — with rates reaching up to 19 percent — into law. According to the state’s revenue department, those who died on or after May 17 of this year and leave a taxable estate of more than $1.5 million in 2005 and $2 million in 2006 and beyond, are required to file a tax return within nine months of death. However, these amounts are deducted from the taxable value of the estate, and tax is due only on amounts exceeding those thresholds.

Olympic College to begin 10 year,
$75M expansion and renovation
   Olympic College President, David Mitchell, recently announced a major overhaul of the Olympic College Bremerton Campus.
   First on the list is a new $22 million Math and Science Building to be completed in Jan. 2007. The Bremer Student Center will get a $1.2 million face-lift and the bookstore a $2.5 million expansion. A $43 million project will replace the old Humanities building with a new 80,000 square foot structure. A 466 car parking garage is also part of the project expected to be approved by the state legislature in Sept. 2009.
   Other plans under review include a new Art Center, medical/health programs, replacement of the automotive facility and a new building dedicated to early-childhood and day-care classes. This is the first major transformation since Olympic College opened in 1946.

Westsound Bank announces record growth
   David K. Johnson, president and CEO of Bremerton-based Westsound Bank, recently announced record growth for the 6-month period ending June 30.
   As of June 30, assets totaled $184,702,000, an increase of 105.9 percent over the same 6-month period ending June 30, 2004. Loans totaled $156,584,000, an increase of 102.1 percent; and deposits totaled $169,605,000, an increase of 112.71 percent.
   In addition, net income for the 6-month period ending, June 30 totaled $1,153,000, an increase of 173.2 percent over the same period ending June 30, 2004.

Anderson enters new phase
of innovative seabasing research
   Art Anderson Associates, which is headquartered in Bremerton, has entered a new phase in one of its Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contracts with the U.S. Navy. In this phase, the firm will work to optimize the speed and throughput of the company-developed high-speed lighterage vessel required by amphibious military operational scenarios. Guidance from the Navy and the results of the analysis will determine specific design parameters for the vessel, allowing the Navy and the firm to proceed with vessel engineering and design.
