Scott Alexander: More than just a golf pro...

   If you had to sum up Scott Alexander in one phrase, that phrase would be this: he knows golf. The long-time director of Gold Mountain Golf Complex in Bremerton, Alexander has been a golf professional for more than two decades.
   “I love it,” Alexander said of his profession. “I don’t even really think of it as a job most of the time.”
   Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Alexander’s family relocated to Bremerton in 1974 when his father, a JC Penney manager, transferred to the downtown Bremerton store.
   “It was between my junior and senior year of high school,” he said of the family move. “I begged [my parents] to let me stay.”
   His parents allowed him to remain in Portland to finish high school. After graduation, Alexander attended the University of Oregon for a year, then transferred to Olympic College in Bremerton, and ultimately graduated from Seattle University in 1979 with a degree in counseling.
   Although an avid golfer who played competitively in college, and spent much of his first year out of college playing in amateur golf tournaments, working as a golf professional was not Alexander’s first choice...  (Full Article)

Zamboanga gets a facelift

Amy Burnett releases new book on Bremerton
   Amy Burnett has just released a new book titled “Amy’s Bremerton Window.” The book, five years in the making, is a compilation of newspaper columns, including a chapter comprised of articles written for the Kitsap Peninsula Business Journal in 2003, guest commentary and related historical photographs and Burnett sketches.

KCU names Work as new training manager
   Kitsap Credit Union has hired Arlene Work as its new training manager. She brings over 32 years of training experience to this position. Work will focus on developing internal WebX training sessions, as well as development and revision of current training programs. Custom Printing on the move
   Custom Printing, at 310 Winslow Way E., will be closing down its press/bindery and moving across the street to the space formerly occupied by the American Marine Bank Trust Department.
   The company will operate a copy shop in the new space and ship printing jobs to its Seattle operations, where its press and bindery units will be relocated.

Sweet Factory to re-open
   Sweet Factory, a retail bulk candy store, will re-open a store at Kitsap Mall. The Kitsap Mall store closed shortly after the parent company, Archibald Candy Corp., declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in 2002.
   Sweet Candy, LLC has since acquired the Sweet Factory stores.

   Avalara’s AvaTax service, headquartered on Bainbridge Island, has been awarded Microsoft Corporation’s .NET Connected, according to Avalara’s CEO, Jared Vogt. “The AvaTax Web service is key to Avalara’s AvaTax ST solution, which automates our clients’ sales tax compliance function,” Vogt said. “This service includes on-demand address validation, tax jurisdiction research and rate calculation, reporting and returns, and has been created specifically for use by small and medium businesses.”

Port Orchard’s first wine shop opens
   Puget Sound Wine Cellar, located two doors down from JJ’s on the Bay, recently held its grand opening.
   Owner Dennis Lei plans to carry wine and beer from around the world with prices ranging from $3.50 to $150 for a bottle. He will also feature wines of Ironstone Vineyards, which is owned by members of his family.
