If nothing else, Ed Ellis is an opportunist.
When the occasion opened up last year for Americans to trade with Cuba for the first time in more than 40 years, Ellis Bainbridge Island company became the first shipper under government contract to transport grain to Castros communist country.
A similar situation occurred several weeks back when Ellis company San Juan Navigation won a contract to ship wheat to Iraq for humanitarian relief. San Juan is one of several Seattle-area companies that will have a hand in helping restore order to war ravaged Iraq. Patricia Denchels 32-year dream has materialized into a 300-square-foot shop called Pats Handmade Crafts in Silverdale.
Over the years Denchel has built a following at craft fairs, with her hand-milled soaps, scented candles and vintage one-of-a-kind button jewelry. Her beaded amulet bags are made from seed beads from Japan and lampwork beads. The store will also feature fun and unique rubber stamps.

Kitsap Trees earns conservation award |
Kitsap Trees was recently honored with the Kitsap County Outstanding Achievement Conservation Leadership Award. The newly-formed group was recognized at the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners Meeting on April 21.
Kitsap Trees has planted trees along areas of Bremerton, worked with schools and other non-profits acquiring native plants and trees, and will collaborate with the state Department of Transportation to plant trees along the state highways from Bremerton to Poulsbo in a project aptly named Kitsap Treeways. |
