Paratransit wins two new contracts
   Paratransit Services of Bremerton recently won two new transportation contracts, in Tehama County, Calif., and Lorton, Virginia. In California, Paratransit took over operation of Tehama County’s public fixed-route service and its public ADA demand-response service on July 1.
   In Virginia, Paratransit Services subcontracts with LogistiCare as the transit provider for ADA demand-response service in the northern part of the state and the Washington D.C. area. It expects to expand into Maryland in October.

Whatcom County bans fish farming
   The Whatcom County council recently voted 5-2 to pass a resolution against salmon farming due to concerns over escapements and disease. The county will ban commercial marine salmon net pens because of the threats posed to wild salmon, according to the resolution.
   The move is just the latest in a series of debates over fish farming’s effects on wild species. The fish have a habit of spreading disease and escaping, threatening the vanishing stocks of wild Pacific salmon, proponents of the resolution say.

Timberland Bank to open in Silverdale
   Hoquiam-based Timberland Bank will open its second Kitsap County branch by fall and it’s 14th overall.
   Construction of the new facility is under way at the corner of Bucklin Hill and Mikelberry roads in Silverdale, adjacent to Christa Shores retirement complex.
   Timberland opened a lending center in Port Orchard in 1996. It expanded to a larger office in Silverdale and then to a full-service branch in Poulsbo in 1999.

Local artist to exhibit in Montana
   Port Orchard artist, Penney Lockhart has been accepted as an exhibiting artist in the Kalispell Western Artists’ Show in Kalispell, Montana.
   This is a juried event and she was selected for her extraordinary work in portraying the faces of the Native American in ink, sand and watercolor. Her works are realistic and historically correct.
   Lockhart resides in Port Orchard at the Tombiglee Studio.

New arts center opens with Cactus Flower
