Grocery war to heat up in South Kitsap
Wal-Mart to double size of its Bethel Road store
to become S.K’s seventh supermarket
By Lary Coppola
Everyone in South Kitsap knew that when Wal-Mart paid $909,000 for the eight acres of land directly adjacent to its Bethel Road store, that something was going to happen.
Speculation focused on a Sam’s Club, the retail giant’s wholesale rival to Costco, being built on the site amid rumors that Costco was eyeing a spot near the Sidney Road and Sedgwick Road intersection adjacent to Highway 16.

Wal-Mart has begun the process of seeking county approval to double the size of its Bethel Road store to add a full-service supermarket. When completed, it will bring the total number of grocery stores in South Kitsap to seven — all within a literal stone’s throw of each other.
The area currently supports two Albertsons — one that was built last year while the other just finished an extensive remodel and addition; a Safeway that’s immediately adjacent to Wal-Mart; a Fred Meyer just up the street at Bethel and Sedgwick; a QFC at South Park Plaza, and the newest grocery store, Saar’s Marketplace Food and Drug in the K-Mart Plaza on Mile Hill Drive...  (Full Article)

Local utility district, new local phone company proposed
Quality telecommunications and broadband access are as critical to economic development in the new millennium as rail and air service were in the 20th century. Governmental center inches forward
Commissioners split vote to commit $320,000
to move the project forward
By Lary Coppola
By a 2-1 vote, the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners are moving ahead with plans to build a controversial new governmental center in downtown Bremerton. The building would house a number of county offices including those of the commissioners, as well as state and federal offices. It would also become the new Bremerton City Hall, housing all the city government offices.

However, she was outvoted 2-1 by Commissioners Chris Endresen and Tim Botkin when it came time to commit the county to advancing the project to its next phase — studies and designs for the $33 million center...  (Full Article)
