Smart Growth conference a successful first step

“Smart Growth in Puget Sound, Kitsap: A Special Opportunity,” was held Nov. 28 at the Admiral Theatre in downtown Bremerton. The conference brought many of the factions of Kitsap’s multi-fractured growth management debate together for the first time all in one place, with one common goal — intelligent planning for future growth in a manner that addressed jobs, land use and preservation of the environment.

Pacific Northwest Bank declares dividend
The board of directors of Pacific Northwest Bancorp have announced a dividend of 14 cents per share to shareholders of record on Dec. 15. The dividend will be paid on Jan. 10, 2001.
   The bank has paid a dividend of 14 cents for the past 10 consecutive quarters and consistently paid cash dividends since going public in 1991.

Minimum wage to increase on Jan. 1
The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries reminds employers that the new minimum wage of $6.72 per hour takes effect on Jan. 1. This is a 22¢ per hour increase over the current minimum.
   The increase is the result of an initiative approved by voters in 1998 that ties the minimum wage to changes in the federal consumer price index.

Jameson steps down in Silverdale
Betty Sue Jameson has turned in her resignation to the board of directors of the Silverdale Chamber of Commerce to accept another position. She served the Chamber in the capacity of operations manager.

Roberts joins Washington Federal
Washington Federal Savings recently announced that Ken Roberts had joined the company as Appraisal Review Officer.
   Roberts brings 23 years of appraisal experience to the institution after serving as chief appraiser for the Appraisal Enhancement Services from 1996-2000. He was also senior appraiser at Bank of America from 1993-1996 and owner of Ken Roberts Appraisal Service from 1980 to 1993.

Post-holiday “inventory diet” can cut excess taxes
After the holidays, some businesses may need to go on the “Inventory Diet” to slim down and cut out excess fat. By donating non-moving, overstock merchandise to charity, a corporation can earn a federal income tax deduction under Section 170 (e)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
   According to the National Association for the Exchange of Industrial Resources (NAEIR), products that can be trimmed in this manner include canceled orders, returns, seconds, packaging changes, discontinued items, and slow sellers.

IRS cuts down on required receipts
Employees will not be required to produce documentation for most travel- business expenses under $75, according to rules issued recently by the Internal Revenue Service. Previously, employees had to document most expenses of $25 or more.
   Costs for lodging are excluded from the rules and must be documented regardless of the amount, the agency said.
   The rules apply to travel, entertainment, and use of a passenger vehicle, among other expenses. When necessary, documentation must include the amount, time, place, and business purpose of the expense.
