Washington State Ferries said it’s looking for a name for its new 64-car ferry that’s now being built by Todd Shipyards Corp. in Seattle and will enter service next year.
Washington State Transportation Commission officials said the first of the two ferries that Todd is building for the state has been named “Chetzemoka,” which is the name of a former S’Klallam chief and was used by a ferry that operated between 1938 and 1947. That new ferry will begin operation this summer.
According to the state, a ferry has to have a name with “statewide significance.” Twenty-one of the state’s existing 23 ferries have names reflecting the state’s tribal influence. The two others are named “Rhododendron” and “Evergreen State.”
A ferry can’t be named after an individual unless that person’s been dead for 20 years.
The state will take proposals for the new ferry name until April 30.
