| Over the next five years, business will become so deeply embodied in technology that it will change the way IT is managed by organizations. This shift will have a profound effect on IT departments, one that will be felt from the chief technology officer level to the help desk specialist, and in the way that the CIO relates to the CEO.
CEOs will be knowledgable about technology and smart companies will have a tech person on their board of directors.
Also, CIOs will no longer be blamed for every technical failing or be expected to pull the weight of each technology innovation. TKBEs (Technology-Knowledgeable Business Experts) will become the organizations most valuable players.
The way that this affects the current IT professional is that standardized processes will replace the IT cowboy the go-to-guy in IT. When they're not around, IT is less productive and theyre not easily replaced. Yet in an age of standardized processes the cowboy is no longer central to an IT department's functioning. Pure techies are going to fare poorly in this atmosphere. They value tech more than anything else, but now it's becoming more about business than tech. If they don't' have great people or writing skills, their value will diminish sccordingly. |
