Does email really increase productivity?
We all know that E-mail can save time. However, experts are quick to point out that E-mail may actually decrease employee’s productivity.

For example, employees who continually open and answer their E-mail throughout the day can fall short on completing assigned tasks. This problem is multiplied when employees access their personal E-mail accounts at work.

To alleviate this problem, employers should consider the following:

  • Train employees to check and respond to their E-mail at scheduled times.
  • Turn off the mail pop-up capability on the company’s computers.
  • Ask employees to check their personal E-mail accounts during their breaks.
  • If possible, have employees remove themselves from their computer to work on important assignments.
  • Train employees to write concise E-mails. Lengthy E-mails wastes time for the author and the reader.
