Telebyte NW offering spam-filtering
service for business

Silverdale-based Telebyte NW has announced a new spam filtering service designed for businesses and agencies running their own email servers.

“The spam plague is becoming overwhelming to legitimate businesses that use the Internet extensively, and whose self hosted email servers are being drowned in a deluge of unwanted ‘junk’ email, most of which is pornographic or dishonest in nature,” said Telebyte President Jim Kendall.

He explained that the service will “wash” a company’s email before it arrives at their email server. Filtered email will be saved in file folders for verification in the event of “false positives.”

“There will be an initial adjustment period as the service is tuned to the customer,” Kendall explained. “The adjustment period will vary by the number of accounts to be filtered, and the extent of the customers incoming email, both volume and number of sources,”

The cost of spam to Internet users is estimated to exceed $12 billion annually, according to recent studies, while the volume of illegitimate email appears to be doubling every three to six months.

“This will not solve the over-all problem of spam,” Kendall noted. “It does not address the problem of consumed bandwidth and it does not address the problem of consumed hardware resources. Nor does it adequately take into account the cost of administering the servers to attempt to maintain filters and blocks. What we do is shift that burden to Telebyte’s staff and systems, and reduce it on the end-users. We are experiencing filtering rates that average up to 95 percent of inbound spam. We don’t get it all, but we are currently blocking as much as nineteen out of twenty,” he added.
