South Kitsap geologist named
to scientific review team

Port Orchard consulting geologist William C. Haneberg has been named to a scientific review team being asked to answer questions related to logging, landsliding, sedimentation, and flooding in five northern California watersheds.

The team’s work is being facilitated by Concur, Inc., a firm specializing in environmental dispute resolution, under a contract with the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Team members will recommend timber harvest rates that will allow the continued recovery of impaired streams and evaluate short-term measures that can be taken to alleviate flooding. The team is scheduled to present its findings early this month.

Haneberg, an expert on landslides and related geologic hazards, is one of seven prominent scientists and engineers appointed to the team. He has been a Port Orchard-based consultant since 1999, and was previously a research geologist and professor at New Mexico Tech. In addition to being an author of peer-reviewed papers on landslides and the lead technical editor of the book Clay and Shale Slope Instability, he serves on the editorial policy board of the scientific journal Environmental & Engineering Geoscience.

Haneberg can be contacted at bill@haneberg.com or (360) 871-9359.
