| The Linux movement is expected to reach another milestone next month when Linus Torvalds officially sanctions the long-awaited Linux 2.4 kernel for commercial release.
The Linux founder and guardian, who is also an engineer at Transmeta Corp., said the final kernel will be posted in early December.
There are no known showstoppers, but Ive asked all the major Linux houses to start deploying the current test kernels internally and start it through their test cycles, Torvalds said. Weve already found a few things that way, and hopefully, a month of this will shake out the worst.
Linux 2.4 is deemed a major milestone because it incorporates features important to the corporate sector, including enhanced support for symmetric multiprocessing, USB support, and a rewritten networking layer. |
