Sun Microsystems sees Linux buy as new strategic direction
In its $2 billion acquisition of Cobalt Networks, Sun is buying more than a company and a product line. Its acquiring a new strategic direction.
The Cobalt Networks acquisition, expected to be completed by years end, will give Sun Microsystems expertise in several important areas its almost ignored until now: Internet appliance servers; Linux; and inexpensive servers, priced in the $1,000 range.
Sun will be able to offer its customers a product line from turnkey appliances to massively scalable datacenter solutions, with price points from less than $1,000 to over $1 million, said Ed Zander, president and COO of Sun Microsystems. Its a fastball down the middle; its a natural fit for us.
