Intel miscue opens door for AMD
Intel’s recall of its speediest Pentium IIIs could open the door for its archrival to enter the coveted corporate market, analysts say.

Thus far, Intel Corp. competitor Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has been virtually invisible in corporate settings, in part because of Intel’s reputation for reliability.

“Corporations, until now, have bought up the quality proposition of ‘Intel Inside,’” said Rob Enderle, a Giga Information Group analyst, referring to Intel’s advertising slogan. “But this could be an opportunity [for AMD] to make headway. This is a beachhead.”

Enderle noted that none of the major OEMs use AMD chips in their corporate lines. But the recall erodes Intel’s image, he said, and could create demand among corporate customers for AMD-powered computers.

“This could be a real problem for Intel,” he said.
