| Compaq and CMGI have launched Freeup, a joint venture that will offer Internet-based products, services, and information for a number of professional communities, including IT workers.
Compaq will contribute about $11 million to fund Freeup, and CMGI will kick in roughly $9 million. Freeup will maintain its sites under the umbrella URL Freeup.com, which will go live in the fall.
Mia Shernoff, a former executive vice president at insurance company AON, has been appointed CEO.
Compaq signaled its intention to launch such a service earlier this year, when it introduced its ultra-slim iPaq computer and pledged a greater focus on Internet-related initiatives. |
