A new kind of wire
The common wire has stayed the same since before Ben Franklin flew a kite. But change may be coming to the wire. IBM researchers have created something called a carbon nanotube that may replace wiring inside a chip. The nonmetallic nanotubes are microscopic – which would allow manufacturers to squeeze billions of transistors onto a single chip. Besides making circuits smaller, they would work faster, because electricity wouldn’t have as far to travel.

Chips so small that...
Hewlett Packard has developed computer memory chips so small that several thousand could fit on the tip of a human hair.
It’s not a gimmick. The speed of chips now is limited by their size; electricity doesn’t have far to travel in a tiny chip, so they can work faster. The need is great. Scientists say speed increases for today’s chips will reach physical limits in about 10 years. It will be years, HP said, before these time chips reach the market.

Heads-up display motorcycle helmet
If a new prototype project catches on, motorcycles will be operated similar to jet fighters. DesignWorlds/USA has created a helmet with a video heads-up display – just like in combat aircraft – that provides all the instrument readouts. The color LCD is just 2 inches from the eye, but through optical magic, the information is in focus at infinity. That’s important because it allows the eye to see the data and yet focus on the road ahead.
