Volvo continues to expand its model line numerically with current models ranging from S40 to XC90 (a C30 is coming soon). The numbers are relative to vehicle size and while we enjoy the full lineup the mid-size S60 and V70 are favorites. The focus of this review is the S60.
We like the S60 because its large enough to be comfortable, but still small enough to be nimble and fun to drive. We also think the S60 is one of the best proportioned, most handsome Volvos. A restyled nose featuring a new grille and front bumper are 2007 changes that have enhanced the already slick styling. The front spoiler was redesigned for better aerodynamics as well as a more aggressive appearance. Color-coordinated body panels help unify the look.
Some chassis improvements were made for 2007. These changes were done with better handling and a sportier demeanor in mind. Shock absorber and spring rates were increased, as were the anti-roll bars. Solid bushings now support the anti-roll bars for more precise control. These chassis upgrades benefit the S60 2.5T, S60 2.5T AWD and S60 T5.
For real handling excitement and straight-line performance our favorite S60 model is the 300 horsepower S60R. The S60R has a highly sophisticated adjustable chassis system known as Volvo Four C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept). This active chassis system compensates for road conditions and variables with a network of sensors, All-Wheel-Drive with Instant Traction and DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control).
The Volvo S60R suspension system is 3-way adjustable. Depending on driving conditions and your mood, you can quickly cycle between comfort, sport and advanced. Weve driven other adjustable suspension systems, but often wondered if the controls were anything more than a placebo knob. With the Volvo system the differences between settings is very noticeable.
The top-of-the-line S60R is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder that produces 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The engines torque curve is outstanding reaching maximum torque at 1,950 rpm and holding it through 5,250 rpm. The smooth-shifting 6-speed manual transmission is a joy to drive. The throws are short and precise.
All the power of the S60R doesnt negate its pleasant around-town driving characteristics. The car can be quite civilized until its asked to roar.
S60 front seats are some of the best around. They are comfortable and supportive. The steering wheel is thick and contoured. Interior controls take a while to get used to. Volvos extensive safety features are, as always, outstanding.
Rear seat legroom can be compromised depending on how far back the front seats are. Extra tall rear passengers can be squeezed by the sloping rear roofline. That coupe-like styling affects rear headroom. Interior storage bins are on the small side.
Volvos S60 sedans fall midway between the extremes of Volvo sedan sizes and as such provide an excellent compromise for the greatest potential audience.
Whines: My biggest whine is that I dont own an S60R. Other than that the back seat is on the snug side and a larger trunk opening would be nice.
Bottom Line: The 2007 Volvo S60 is a handsome, very solid, well-built sedan thats great fun to drive in all forms, but especially fun in the AWD and S60R (also AWD) models. |
