| New-car buyers looking for Consumer Reports recommendation of the best family car on the market have two choices for the first time. In its widely watched annual survey of new vehicles which was released last month, the Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Passat were the top picks.
Consumer Reports found the 2000 Passat the best overall choice for a family sedan with a 4-cylinder engine while the 2000 Camry was selected in the less fuel-efficient, but more powerful, 6-cylinder category. The ranking marks a return for the Camry, the top-selling new car in the nation.
The Passat, a stylish and increasingly popular competitor from Germany knocked the Japanese sedan out of the top spot last year for the first time in 16 years. The magazine decided to add the second winner to the popular family sedan segment because of the burgeoning number of products now in the same class. |
