Kitsap County Senior Information and Assistance is partnering with the National Council on the Aging in launching a free, easy-to-use online service that helps older Americans identify both federal and state assistance programs that can improve the quality of their lives. Seniors, their family members, or caregivers can now access the service at www.BenefitsCheckUp.org.

Nearly 1.2 million seniors in America qualify for but don’t receive Social Security; 3 million never receive the Medicaid assistance they deserve and 3.7 million qualify for but do not receive food stamps. read more »

Ah, the dreaded fitness thought. If you think sweat, muscle pain and other unpleasantries are required for keeping your body fit during senior — or any — years, you are wrong.

There are easier ways of sneaking in some regular fitness if the thought of being in a group of spandex-clad people makes you cringe.

Walking may be an underestimated form of exercise, but it is a low-impact, easy way to stay in shape and even lose weight. And you don’t have to go for extensive walks to see results. read more »

 

Dementia is a scary word. Alzheimer’s Disease frightens us. But folks should definitely go to a physician with concerns regarding memory, thinking skills or changes in behavior. A number of tests may be done to discover or eliminate causes.

Once a diagnosis of some sort of dementia has been given, the patient may live up to 20 years more, although eight is the average, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Therefore, the sooner the diagnosis is made, the better, so plans for the future can be put into place. read more »

 

The American Association of Retired Persons Tax-Aide program helps seniors file their personal tax returns from Feb. 1 through April 15. Volunteers are trained to assist in filing basic forms, including 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ. Electronic filing is offered at over 300 sites in Washington.

AARP Tax-Aide is available to all taxpayers with middle to low incomes, with special attention to those age 60 and older, was well as disabled, and non-English speaking taxpayers.

The Better Business Bureau and the Kent Senior Activity Center present Scam Jam 2004, a free, one-day anti-fraud seminar open to the public at the Kent Senior Activity Center, 600 E. Smith St. in Kent, on Feb. 27. The doors open at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 2 p.m.

Those aged 60 and over make up 15 percent of the national population and a full 30 percent of all cases of fraud are committed against them. Scam Jam 2004 will address important topics for seniors, their families, and caretakers.

When is senior day care an option to consider? Seniors might need the activity and social level not available at home. On the other side, caregivers are certainly entitled to take time to care for their own needs, such as getting a haircut, paying bills, attending a school concert, or even taking a vacation.

David GodboltWhen David Godbolt of Sentinel Construction worked on his disabled brother’s home a couple of years ago, he was surprised to learn that no other contractor in the area specialized in that type of work — and there were only few statewide. He saw an unmet need for senior and disabled clients who have physical constraints or safety concerns in standard homes. read more »

 

Kitsap County’s Department of Community Development recently announced the promotion of two staffers. Mike Barth has been named chief building official and Eric Baker as land use and environmental review manager in the Development Permitting Division of DCD.

Barth has been chosen to fill the vacancy created by the impending retirement of Mark H Grimm, who has been a Kitsap County employee for over 30 years, the last five as the chief building official. read more »
